Announcing our Arctic photography competition winners!
The results are in from our 2018 Arctic Photography Competition! Thank you to all the expeditioners who entered. The winners are Aurelio Hernandez (first prize winner), Caroline Byrne (first runner up) and Maria Jose Torres Lopez (second runner up). All our winners travelled on the Spitsbergen Odyssey expedition (now named Svalbard Odyssey). Congratulations from all of us at Aurora Expeditions!
We must also extend another big thank you to our photography competition judge, Peter Eastway. Peter is one of our highly revered expedition photography guides, author of the Lonely Planet’s Guide to Landscape Photography and winner of the 1996 and 1998 AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year Award. We are very honoured to have Peter on our voyages, sharing his highly sought after photography tips in our free polar photography workshops.

Winner – ‘The Impossible Sunset’ by Aurelio Hernandez taken in Kraemerpynten, Kvitøya, Svalbard on our Spitsbergen Odyssey
Competition Judge Peter Eastway says: “The photographer has everything right: great light, wonderful colour and an interesting composition that talks about the great open spaces of the Arctic that dwarf even the largest of predators.”
1st Runner Up – ‘Hello There Mr Walrus’ by Caroline Byrne taken in Kraemerpynten, Kvitøya, Svalbard on our Spitsbergen Odyssey
Competition Judge Peter Eastway says: “The contrast between the cool whites of the brash ice and the warm browns of the inquisitive walrus produce a charming animal portrait.”
2nd Runner Up – ‘Stare’ by Maria Jose Torres Lopez taken on Carl XII Island, Svalbard on our Spitsbergen Odyssey
Competition Judge Peter Eastway says: “There’s a real connection between the photographer and the photographed, the bear looking intently into the lens produces an engaging portrait.”
